Supporting ADHD in the Classroom: Workshops for Teachers

It was a privilege to recently deliver workshops to teachers and learning support staff across Adelaide public primary schools. I spoke with many dedicated educators from our state’s public school system, all working hard to support the diverse needs of their students.

Around 8% of Australian students have a diagnosis of ADHD, which means there are often one to two students in every SA classroom who are navigating attention, regulation, and learning challenges. Most of our teachers will be teaching students with ADHD. Despite this, access to practical, relevant training is not always easy. One of the most consistent pieces of feedback I hear from teachers is that they want to feel more confident in how they support their students with ADHD.

This is where I feel particularly passionate! ADHD is not a lack of ability - it is a difference in how a brain works. With the right understanding and support, these students can engage, learn, and thrive in the classroom.

I loved the opportunity to share strategies that are practical, realistic, evidence-based and grounded in what actually works in busy school environments. From adjusting expectations, to reducing cognitive load, to supporting regulation and engagement - small shifts can make a significant difference.

Moving forward, Ford Psychology will be offering workshops for teachers across Adelaide. The goal is to continue building knowledge, sharing practical tools, and supporting educators to feel confident that they have the skills to meet the needs of their ADHD students.

Because when teachers feel supported, our students are too - and that’s when real learning and growth can happen.
